Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial intrastate hazardous materials carriers who haul types and quantities requiring a safety permit must register for a USDOT Number.
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is for any individual or company involved in commercial transportation that travels interstate and meets certain criteria. The unique feature of the IRP is that it lets each registered carrier obtain one plate and registration cab card to travel in multiple states at specific weights.
